W wygłoszonej w 1945 roku w Waszyngtonie mowie Niemcy i naród niemiecki Tomasz Mann udaje się na poszukiwanie korzeni narodowego socjalizmu i pyta o „zagadkowość charakteru" Niemców. W Polsce esej ten należy do tekstów, które wpływają na sposób myślenia o sąsiadującym kraju i pełnią tym samym funkcję pośredniczącą w polsko-niemieckim dialogu kultur. Szczególną rolę przypisuje się tu przekładowi, który - jak postulują badacze zgru-powani wokół projektu Göttinger Sonderforschungsbereich Die literarische Übersetzung - prowadzi do zbliżenia odmiennych kultur. Na przykładzie trzech tłumaczeń różnych autorów w artykule zostanie pokazane, jak w tłumaczeniu zinterpretowano przedstawiony w oryginale obraz Niemiec i przekazano go polskiemu czytelnikowi.
In der im Jahre 1945 in Washington gehaltenen Rede Deutschland und die Deutschen begibt sich Thomas Mann auf die Suche nach den Wurzeln des Nationalsozia-lismus und fragt nach dem „Rätsel im Charakter" der Deutschen. In Polen gehört der Essay zu den Texten, die das Denken über das Nachbarland mitprägen und somit eine vermittelnde Funktion im deutsch-polnischen Kulturdialog erfüllen. Eine besondere Aufgabe kommt hierbei der Übersetzung zu, die - wie der Göttinger Sonderforschungsbereich Die literarische Übersetzung postuliert - eine Annäherung an die andere Kultur darstellt. Am Beispiel von drei Übersetzungen verschiedener Autoren wird im Folgenden gezeigt, wie das im Original intendierte Deutschlandbild übersetzerisch interpretiert und an den polnischen Leser weitergegeben wurde.
In his 1945 lecture, "Germany and the Germans" given in Washington D.C., Thomas Mann makes an attempt to investigate the roots of national socialism and solve the "riddle" of the German nature. In Poland this lecture is one of the texts that has influenced the way in which the western neighbour has been perceived, and at the same time, it has played a role as an intermediary in the Polish-German cultural dialogue. This intermediary function is performed naturally and particularly by translation, which - as it is postulated by Göttinger Sonderforschungsbereich Die literarische Übersetzung - leads toward the rapprochement of cultures. The article offers an analysis of how the original image of Germany painted in the lecture by Thomas Mann was interpreted and conveyed to the Polish reader through three different translations.
